4.0 out of 5 stars Great add-on for GL1800, but imperfect functionality

I installed this on a 2003 GL1800. Installation was extremely easy. It plugs right in to the existing CD player harness under the seat. The worst part is cutting a hole in back of the seat to route wiring into the trunk, but still not a big deal.

Getting it up and running is another thing altogether. The instructions are limited and it took a number of of tips on various websites to finally get it working. After numerous trips back and forth between the bike and PC, here are a few of the things I found.

1. DO NOT press the A.SEL RPT/RANDOM button on the GW console once this is running. It will lock up the system and will actually continue to play after the bike is turned off! Removing fuse 22 is the only way to reset the system, and trip mileage and clock are also reset.

2. Create folders as shown in the so-called "instructions," but be sure to put a number of tracks in the root folder. The root is actually CD1. It appears that up to 99 tracks can be placed in each folder.

3. I still haven't figured out the folder numbers. Root shows as CD1, but then mine seems to call folder CD02 CD3.

4. Tracks will be arranged in the order in which they are copied to the flash card. Coping them one at a time in the order you want is one option. I found that using MediaMonkey also works. I created a playlist for each folder in MediaMonkey, randomized it, saved it, and then sent it to the corresponding folder on the MicroSD card.

5. Press CD on the GW console to activate the system.

6. Flicking the CD button on the GW controls will change tracks. Holding it for a couple of seconds will change CDs/Folders.

7. DO NOT press the A.SEL RPT/RANDOM button on the GW console...

It would be nice if all of the information above was included in the instructions. I understand that this unit is compatible with multiple vehicles, but if you are going to sell it for a GL1800, then include specific instructions for a GL1800.

I'm still giving it 4 stars, because for ~$50 I have a whole bunch of music available when I turn my bike on and I have some control over it with the stock GW CD controls. The setup hassle is definitely worth it to me to have that convenience in the long run.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ease of installation

Plug in should be compatible with orginal. Too much trouble to install with removing the seats. Rather spend more for a JM and just plug it in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good price

Doesn't quite work like I would want it to but that's not their fault. Description said that it would not work with my goldwing because it has a navigation system and ABS system. I took a chance. Hooks up perfectly (although the cable is extremely short). Had to do some engineering. Works with my cd buttons quite nicely. The thing that doesn't work is when I change to the radio the cd player (this is what it is hooked into will keep playing (you won't hear it but it still plays.) It will stop when the bike is shut off or when you hit the reset button, but that is in the trunk so the bike is usually shut off anyhow. You have to watch how you put the songs on with folders etc. Will hold 594 songs for me. Enoungh for a trip.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product needs improvement through QUALITY CONTROL

I have had 3 of these units, with all three going bad. First one kept going back to the very first song, when starting the bike, second one would freeze on channel 3 lock up, and third one played very well while riding, stopped at my son's house shut bike off, when restarted bike no mp3 player, checked fuse, wiring, pushed reset button, notice no light on unit, went dead. Now I'm on my fourth unit, could be a excellent product IF QUALITY CONTROL WAS IMPROVED.

Have had no issues with this unit as many have claimed. I use a sd card with 9 folders and 45+ songs in each folder. Easily switches from song to song and "cd" to "cd" . not easy to get songs in an order you wants but can be done.

2.0 out of 5 stars They will work but not properly. Too much to do.

I like the fact that it was already made for the system connection, but once it was plugged into the bike (2010 Honda Goldwing) it was skipping tracks and making my system "crazy" to the point that you have to pull fuses #10 and #23 to reset the system.
