I bought this for a 9 year old laptop that has an internal CD drive that quit working. I plugged the drive into a USB port, loaded a software installation CD and it worked flawlessly and was much faster than the older internal drive.
The instructions were a bit confusing and started with the statement that when you plug the drive in you will get a pop-up box asking which program you want to use. Typically you see this when you try to open a file with an extent that doesn't have a define app to run it with and not when you connect a device. However, when installing a new device you frequently get a pop-up box telling you that your PC is installing some necessary software, typically a driver, required to use the device. I didn't receive any pop-up boxes including the software installation pop-up notice as the required driver was apparently already installed.
The only issue I had and the only reason that I gave the drive 4 stars rather than 5 is that when I opened the box with the drive in the plastic trim piece on the CD drawer was hanging on 1 side due to a manufacturing assembly problem. I aligned the trim piece with the drawer, pushed, heard it snap into place and it is now working OK. The trim piece is still not perfectly aligned and I have to push the drawer shut a little harder than I think should be necessary but it works fine. I'm sure that Amazon would have replaced the drive if asked but that would be a waste.
I keep the drive in a drawer and only take out when necessary. No reason to clutter my desk and my PC's USB ports are all on the side towards the front of the PC so the drive would be in the way if I left it plugged in. If you intend to keep the drive plugged in all of the time, note that the USB cable attached to the drive is only about 7 inches long so you might need a USB extension cable which the instructions say to only use extension cables < 31".
The attached cable pops into a trough on the bottom of the unit which keeps things neat and is a nice feature. The design of the trough on the bottom could be improved such that you wouldn't need long finger nails or a pointy object to pop the cable out of the trough.

It’s been many years since I’ve needed or had a need for a DVD or CD burner, but then I needed to do some projects and to my surprise I could not find good CD or DVD burner and also a DVD player.
I first tried a more expensive ORIGBELIE External CD DVD Drive,. It was nonfunctional junk so I returned and bought the far less expensive Gotega External DVD Drive, USB 3.0 Portable CD/DVD +/-RW Drive/DVD Player for Laptop CD. After a day of fighting with crap tech I sighed and got to work fighting the Gotega External DVD Drive.
Welll… EVERYTHING that I tried, starting with hooking it up to a Cheap Samsung Windows notebook and everything that I tried on the Mac worked exactly as it should. All devices found the DVD/CD Burner. I’m very happy with this product and I’m now back to where I used to be with optical media.
The sole complaint that I have is that the connecter cable ships in a contained groove. However, when the drive is connected, the cable is bent severely and will break soon. I had to create a different groove in a furniture slider and glue it in so that it would last. See pictures.
