4.0 out of 5 stars Great unit, but I wish the jacks were farther apart

finding that some pro minijack connectors are too wide to connect to both mic input and output at the same time. I wish they were spaced out just a bit more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Simple. Surprisingly good for the price.

It's as simple as they said. Plug it in and your Linux or Windows box (I don't own a Mac) recognizes it without any new drivers or kernel modules. Sound is not bad either. It's not a 7.1 surround masterpiece, but coupled with good headphones or speakers, it sounds as good as a regular soundcard.

I bought it for the BMax mini computer, as the chipset is dodgy for sound on Linux. This works like a charm, and I don't have to mess with beta drivers (it's a bad chipset, the drivers do their best...). This works in Debian and Ubuntu (specifically the Lubuntu spin), as well as Debian-derivatives like Peppermint.

If you need audio and don't have a slot or a decent chipset... this will fit the bill quite easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works (speakers)

Never tested mic as I use a USB mic. But my onboard sound died so I got this.

16bit / 48khz max.

So I'm going to get a USB DAC instead. I have powered bookshelf speakers and this USB thing just isn't cutting it. Sounds honestly quite good if you're using an equalizer (winamp [I prefer Rock preset] or equalizer apo w/ peace plugin). But I just want *more* now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well but not durable enough

I bought this for my son's HyperX Cloud Alpha headset which uses the 3.5mm connectors, and we're preferring to use the USB port on his computers since he takes it back and forth all the time from notebook to desktop and the desktop has difficult to reach audio ports.

Sound quality with that headset is excellent. The volume is good and it sounds great. We compared to direct analog connection through the 3.5mm ports and there wasn't much difference. Also, it seems to be coming through in full stereo as it should. No issue here with it playing in mono as some have noted. I suspect that YMMV and that all of these things will depend on the headset you're using with it. Seems like a bit of a gamble still, though, if there is a chance you could buy this interface and have only mono sound or low volume or whatever. We had good luck for it to work with this headset. I cannot deduct a star for what "might" happen with others because I didn't experience that. Had I, though, I would have rated it poorly as others have done.

My one complaint, which is why I deducted a star, is that he's only used the headset for 3 months and the adapter has already broken. When he's using the notebook, he's often reclining on a bed with the computer on his lap, and no doubt there is tension being put on the adapter from the blanket underneath or whatever, because some bending right where the metal sleeve that goes into the USB port meets the plastic body of the adapter is what broke it. You can see that the metal part is angled relative to the plastic, and it's worked itself to be quite loose. Electronics inside must have also been stressed. While some might say "be more careful and don't put stress on the plug", I would suggest that it isn't impossible to build a connector like this so that this potential stress point is reinforced better and resistant to that kind of stress, so it certainly could be built to prevent that from happening.

Could we expect such a higher quality construction from an $8 piece, though, when a lot of the others cost more than $8? Probably not. That's why I only docked it a single star instead of knocking off 2 or 3 stars. It is hard to expect a highly durable high quality part for the $8. Still, I do expect at least more durability than to get only 3 months out of it. I have bought a replacement but if the replacement also only lasts a few months, I suppose I'll spend more on the next one and try another brand. I don't intend to buy another of these every few months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as intended

I purchased this item because the headphone jack in my computer broke and I wanted an alternative to taking my laptop in to be repaired. This item does exactly what it claims it will. I'm able to plug this into the USB port and use my headphones or other audio output with no issue. It may reduce sound quality a bit, but if you have an equalizer it will sound fine. My hp notebook was able to automatically detect the device and automatically change audio output settings. From what the directions state, you may have to install or enable the device on your computer for it to function. I would highly recommend this product!
